Supporting actors

Top 15 supporting actors chosen on major actors that have been in several movies, but are usually not the star. Most of these have been in movies where there is at least one major star opposite them. A few may have had movies where they were the major actor, but for the most part they are known for being supporting actors (at least in my mind).

Top 15 Supporting Actors

1. Ed Harris

2. Morgan Freeman

3. Tim Robbins

4. Gene Hackman

5. Tommy Lee Jones

6. Robert DeNiro

7. Jack Nickleson

8. Anthony Hopkins

9. Samuel L. Jackson

10. Sean Penn

11. Christopher Walken

12. Christian Slater

13. Ed Norton

14. Al Pacino

15. Robert Duval

I'm not sure you could classify DeNiro, Nicholson or Pacino as supporting actors. They've definitely had some films where they've played lesser roles. But usually they're the prima donna, lead character type actors.

You gotta add William H. Macy to the list, too. He's a great supporting actor. And Paul Giammatti, the guy from Cinderella Man.

Nicholson's best films were where he is a supporting actor (A Few Good Men, Batman, As Good as it gets). DeNiro and Pacino have been in many films where I would say there is no star (Any Given Sunday, ect...)
Do agree with Macy. I like Giammatti (but don't see him over any of the top 15).

I'd probably put Giamatti over Christian Slater. Has he done any movies in the last 10 years?

How do you see Nicholson as 'supporting actor' in 'As Good As It Gets' ? I'd think he was the star there? BTW, you do know that character IS your brother Jon, right?
