Pop vs. Coke

Found this off my friend Jeremy's blog. What do you call your fountain drinks? I have always gone with Soda (I don't really know why). Living in the south though I hear about Coke all the time (even if people want a Dr. Pepper they call it coke). And I always found it funny to hear "them crazy yankees" call it Pop. Come on now, Pop?!?!
So what do you call it? Here is a map of the breakdown of the U.S.

I call it "The Sweet Elixir of Life"!!!!!

Just kidding. Everybody knows it's coke.

I grew up calling it coke, I guess because that is the brand we almost always drank. I continued calling it coke even after switching to mostly Dr. Pepper. After giving is some thought several years ago I made the conscious decision to say soft drink at fast food places. Sometimes I still fall back to my south Georgia roots and say "coke". Have you noticed that some places like Hardees ask which soft drink you want even though you select it yourself at the fountain?

Pop is Avery's grandpa...

It's Pop.

If I wanted a Dr. Pepper (which is the most disgusting drink next to Root Beer) I would ask for Dr. Pepper. If I wanted a Pepsi I would ask for a Pepsi. Sprite - Sprite. etc... you get the picture

I have always called the drink that I want by its "real" name - just like you Jon. I don't understand why people just don't ask for what specific drink they want. A coke is a coke, sprite is sprite, mountain dew is mountain dew, etc.

That's a pretty cool map!

I agree with Sunny. But when someone is going to the store and you want a soda (as I call it) and don't care the brand, what do you say?

Roxy: I have wondered why they ask you, if you'll fill it up on your own...

It is funny to me how diverse Alaska is on that map...just a thought. We say coke most of the time, but we live in a crazy state that calls everything pop...weird NW hippies I guess.

I don't know Kenny. I'm pretty picky about my brands, so I always ask for the specific product.

awesome! coke is da best.

The county I am from in OK is 50-90% Pop.

Kenny looks like your staunch stance on no lettuce what-so-ever on your taco bell food has kept you from contracting E-Coli.

I'm not giving in...it's coke.

And Jon, saying root beer is gross is just pure madness...close to blasphemy.

Root Beer is good.

I call it Soda, but the west and northeast seem to be the places that call it that. Guess I'm odd.

Madison County was overwellmingly Coke, Montgomery County was almost 95% coke.

I'm with Jamey and Ashley. It's coke, no matter what.

And yes, Kenny, you are odd! :)

And Kenny, you need to join the Beta revolution, man. Everybody's doing it.

Kenny Simpson said...

I'm not a beta person.

But it's better.

I call it Mountain Dew - because that's all that matters.

Jon: I heard about the lettuce problem at T-bell. Tacos are nasty with it on there anyway.

Mountain Dew is my mothers favorite (we are talking about 64 ounces a day).

I'm a Mountain Dew man myself. It's pretty much the only "coke" I drink!

Coke, please. If I need to be specific, as in when I am ordering at a restaurant, I obviously will use the specific brand name. And just because we southerners use a specific name for a generic item, it doesn't mean we are stupid. (Can you tell I'm proud to be from the south?)
